Registry office
Short description
The registry office (état civil in French) registers all the civil events which take place in the life of a person (birth, marriage, death), his / her personal and family statuses (majority, filiation, matrimonial links), his / her names, cantonal and communal civil rights as well as his / her nationality. The events are written on the one hand in the special registers at the place where the event has taken place (register of births, marriages and deaths or recognitions) and on the other hand in the family register which are held at the “lieu d’origine” (kind of home town).

Most of the registrations in the family registers are due to an event. Other registrations come from judicial and administrative decisions, for example a divorce or change of name.

A bit of history
The registering of civil events goes back to the 16th century, when the clergy held the parish registers. In 1876, they were given to the registry office, which was founded in Switzerland after the institution of the compulsory civil marriage.
